Land of the Fathers
I thought this film had a great story, one that was compelling and touching, but ultimately I thought the movie was terribly made. First off the acting was terrible, but it wasn't good either. The editing felt choppy and rough giving the movie a sense of disjointedness. And I don't know if it was just me but the subtitles seemed to be horribly translated. It seemed like sometimes the wrong word would sometimes be in a sentence. I was immensely disappointed because (judging a book by its cover) or in this case a movie by its title, I was expecting something a lot more entertaining. I felt the story being as profound as it was deserved a far better treatment.

I was kind of confused by some of the subtitles too. It seemed like the translation was definitely a little bit off. This film didn't really hold my attention as much as the other two that we have seen so far, but I did like the story behind it. I thought that it was interesting and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I agree with you that there were certain things about it that could have been done better.
The more I think about this film, the more interesting it is. I've got to sit down and get these thoughts out.... Basically my understanding of the film is being framed by my rereading Kerouac's ON THE ROAD + reading DHARMA BUMS for the first time...... Solid! I'll try to get that sorted this week.
I actually agree with you about this film to an extent when I hold it to the expectations of entertainment in films. I cannot fully agree though, because for what it is, I think it teaches us a lot more than we might have known about the people of this region. I guess the reason that I liked it was because I went into it sort of planning on the bad translations and editing, but I think as a piece of the puzzle in this class it functioned quite nicely. I think that this movie is just to be held to different standards to me than something I would typically go out and rent for myself. Let It Be Known.
